Cooling Systems

Know your cooling system...what types are available?

Standard Split System Air conditioner

These are air conditioners that use a furnace to blow air through ductwork in your home.

Ductless Mini-Split Air Conditioner

These are air conditioners or heat pumps that required no ductwork. They're extremely quiet and very efficient.

Standard Air Hanlder Air Conditioner

This is a system that uses round or square ducts in your ceiling to distrubute cooling to your home. It's usually in homes with boiler heating.

Hi-Velocity (Unico/SpacePak) Systems

These are air conditioners that use tiny ducts attached to a high velocity air handling unit usually located in your attic. The easiest way to identify if you have this type of air conditioner is to look for small ductwork(usually about 4") holes in your ceiling. It's usually in homes with boiler heating.

Things to know...
  • R-22(Freon) Phase-Out

The US Government has now mandated the complete phase out of all systems containing refrigerant 22(R-22).
This caused the cost of refrigerant 22 to tripple in price for the past three years.

  • 13 SEER Minimum Mandate

SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio) is the efficiency of an air conditioner. And, a few years back the US Government mandated that all air conditioners must meet at least 13 SEER or more to be allowed for installation.

  • SEER

Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio - This is the way air conditioners are rated in efficiency.

  • R-22

Refrigerant 22 - Often referred to as Freon, this is the older HCFC refrigerant used in almost all home air conditioners since central air conditioning's inception.

  • R-410a

Refrigerant 410-a - Sometimes referred to as Puron© is the new HFC refrigerant that is now required for use in all residential cooling systems today.

Have a Freon leak?

"Have you lost refrigerant in your old air conditioner? Sometimes this is calls a "freon leak"...

Well, what you don't know might cost you.

Refrigerant 22 (R-22) is in its final stages of being phased out of existance in the U.S. That means R-22 is going to cost much more in the future.

R-22 has almost trippled in price every year for the past two to three years.

Remember, refrigerant doesn't wear out! If it is not in your system where it belongs then it leaked out. And, unlike human beings, refrigerant leaks do not heal on there own. Adding "leak-stop" is like putting a band-aid on something that needs stitches. If you have an air conditioner that uses the old R-22 you should consider replacement; especially if your air conditioner is leaking refrigerant (freon)."
